About this Site
This website has more than 60 web pages most of which are dedicated to a single significant aspect of Vermeer's masterpiece, The Girl with a Pearl Earring. I have attempted to bring together in a single orderly format information regarding the painting that I was able to glean from existing literature, institutional and personal communications. Due to the complexity of such an undertaking I am bound to discover new information which naturally will be integrated into the existing format. Every attempt was made to be as thorough as possible and interpret existing discrepancies in an objective manner.
Being a painter, it was particularly enjoyable for me to write the pages dedicated to Vermeer's painting technique and materials even though much uncertainty still exists in regards. Not all significant images were included due to internet loading time. Large high quality images of the painting can be accessed at Images.
The copyrights of all the images of works of art on this site should be considered to be those of the museums or private collections which house them. The titles, dimensions, technique and location of every painting on the site can be found on the bibliography page. All images of the Girl with a Pearl Earring are copyright of the Mauritshuis in The Hague. All other contents of the site are copyright of Jonathan Janson.
